Two years ago, back when I started my career, I knew very little compared to what I know now. I mean not only what I learn day by day at work, I also mean what I’ve learnt about myself.
How well do you know yourself?
Facing adult life and take full control of your life is mind-boggling, but it’s exciting as well. What a challenge! It’s that time when any decision you make, either decisive or irrelevant, will settle the rest of your life. Daunting, right? As a 20-something, as normal is that you don’t know what do you want to do with your life and thus you make decisions without a clear purpose. You know nothing, working girl 😁. But hey, don’t worry. I’ll tell you something: knowledge is the key.
Know who you are, how you are. What you want and don’t want. What you like and dislike. Know what you are willing to and what your limits are. In short, know yourself.
No doubt our thoughts evolve as we experience life. We can often change our minds, such a legitimate thing, but starting the ride with a slight idea about you will help you make the best decisions: those that are taken with the guts having heard first your head.
I didn’t know me two years ago; I wasn’t asking any question to myself. I was just moving forward without a destination and I made decisions following my instinct regardless of what my rational said. As I put my feet into adult life, I felt overwhelmed by the enormous responsibility that fell into my hands: my entire future life. How comfortable it is when we were kids and our parents chose for us, right? I took it very seriously, so I started thinking and thinking and wondering about life. Then an apple dropped on my head: it was time for an exercise of introspection. Have you ever tried to do so?
It’s about taking a break to listen to you. Rediscover you. Ask you the right questions about the feelings and emotions that address you. This exercise may seem absurd (and I’m afraid it is at some point), but trust me: to stop and look inside to know yourself is the best thing you can do for you. This is how you’ll find out those things of the present that you don’t like and want to change in order to be the best possible self; and yes, this is will help you to have a little clearer wherever you want to run your next step.
Now I know twice about me than two years ago, and now I can choose and move forward without losing sight of the big reason why. Stay motivated, go for yours!
